Former Talladega College President Dr. Joseph Nathan Gayles, 71, died at his home in Atlanta Thursday, Oct. 2

Funeral service for Gayles will be Thursday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham.

Gayles served as president at Talladega College from 1977 to 1983. During his presidency, the college raised more than $40 million and conducted the first successful capital campaign in the history of the college.

Birmingham City Councilwoman Maxine Herring Parker worked as an executive assistant to the president during Gayles’ time at Talladega College.

“I and all other Talladegans were saddened by the demise of Dr. Joseph N. Gayles Jr.,” Parker said. “With youth and energy, he brought hope to Talladega College when the school was faced with many challenges. He will be missed by fellow Talladegans and friends.”

Dr. Joseph Johnson also served as Talladega College president and was a friend of Gayles.

“He leaves us with a real thirst for education. He lived it. He understood it. He taught people in Talladega that education leads to empowerment,” Johnson said.

Johnson said Gayles used his Ivy League education and status to make a difference in people’s lives instead of using them for personal gain.

“He was a great leader and president and one of the best presidents in Talladega College’s history,” Johnson said. “He left it in pretty good shape for folks like me.”

Gayles was born in Birmingham on Aug. 7, 1937, as the first child of Joe N. Gayles and Ernestine Williams of Bessemer. He attended public schools in Birmingham and graduated from Ullman High School in Birmingham as the top student in mathematics.

He entered Dillard University on a full academic scholarship and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry. He attended Brown University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1958 and earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry.

He would later work as a member of the chemistry faculty at Morehouse College and became the program director of the initiative that led to the founding of the Morehouse School of Medicine.

After Gayles’ time at Talladega College, he returned to the Morehouse School of Medicine, where he served as vice president of institutional advancement and helped the school raise more than $60 million before he retired in 1996.

Gayles had been published in the “Journal of Physical Chemistry,” received the Presidential Leadership Award from the Morehouse School of Medicine, and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity and the Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Chi social fraternities.

He was baptized at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church and was a longtime member of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta.

Gayles was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl Gayles and Robert Gayles.

He is survived by his son, Jonathan Gayles (Pam); daughter, Monica Dorsey (Anthony); two grandchildren; two nieces; former wife, Gloria Gaynes; and a number of cousins and friends.

Talladega College
National Alumni Association

November 29, 2007

Dear Alumni,

As 2007 winds down, I’m taking this opportunity to share a few insights with you as it relates to the TCNAA and the College. I hope you’ll take the time to reflect on this message.

Your National Alumni Association continues to assist the College, but in truth, we are limited by what we can do resulting from a small financial membership base.   Ideally, every alumnus would join the Alumni Association. The cost - an annual fee of only $35.00. You are probably asking “why should I join the Alumni Association” or even, “What has the TCNAA done lately?” Here are a few reasons:

·      Since the national pledge campaign of 2003, the TCNAA has contributed almost $100,000 to the College. This amount was collected through fundraising (2 car raffles) campaigns and management of dues.

·       When special needs occur at the College, the TCNAA responds. For example, recently the College wanted to underwrite the expenses of Miss Talladega such that she could represent the student body at the UNCF Pre-Alumni Annual Meeting. Without hesitation, your Alumni Association went into its Treasury to assist with those costs.

·     Each nationally elected officer serves at NO cost to you. Our Officers come to campus, twice a year, and pay their own expenses. As such, in April 2008 we will elect new National Officers. To participate in the process, you must be finacially active.

I sincerely hope that you will support your nationally elected Officers by joining the Association. If each of you reading this e-mail were to become financially active, our effectiveness could be increased significantly. To join, simply go to our website at www.TCNAA.com. If you pay your national dues in your local Chapter, we encourage you to continue to do so. Again I ask that you join us and help us.

If you have not heard, the Board of Trustees elected a new President for the College earlier this month. Dr. Billy Hawkins comes to us from Texas College, and will officially join our College family January 1st. I’m excited about Dr. Hawkins joining us because he has firsthand experience with addressing the challenges that face our Alma Mater. Under Dr. Hawkins’ leadership, Texas College experienced a 90% increase in fundraising, an 82% increase in enrollment, and an additional four academic programs. Dr. Hawkins leaves that institution with no long term debt and all renovations have been paid for. To learn more about Dr. Hawkins, please read the attached article:   http://www.tylerpaper.com/article/20071030/NEWS08/71030014

I also want to bring to your attention that the College is embarking upon its 10 year accreditation review. A critical aspect of this review by SACS is a look at our financial status, and balanced books address this matter. We ask that you send a contribution to the College before December 31st to help in this regard.

As information, Dr. and Mrs. Prater will leave the campus at the close of this semester. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and we thank them for leaving our Alma Mater in a better situation than when they arrived. It was Dr. Prater’s leadership that brought us successfully through accreditation. Dr. and Mrs. Prater plan to resume their life as retirees in Williamsburg, Virginia. We sincerely hope that Dr. Prater can resume the golf game he placed on hold for his alma mater.

Finally, the TCNAA Board has scheduled our 2008 Triennial Reunion for July 31 – August 3, in Atlanta, GA. Formerly known as the Grand Reunion, this event will be held at the Marriott Hotel – Perimeter Center. This will be an opportunity for you to meet Dr. Hawkins, our newly elected National Officers, and to just have fun! More details will come out during first quarter.

As always, I welcome your ideas, suggestions and opinions. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at: jhendersonsr@msn.com

Sincerely,

Jesse Henderson

President
